Toolbox Talks by Trade

A general safety list is a good start, but crews pay attention when the talk is about the work they'll do today. These pages group our toolbox talks by trade. Each one lists the hazards that hurt people in that trade most often, links the talks that cover them, and gives foremen a ready 10-minute outline and answers to common questions.

Choose your trade

  • Concrete: Cement burns, silica dust, rebar impalement, formwork, pump trucks and heavy lifting.
  • Roofers: Edges and skylights, ladder access, heat and sun, nail guns, wind and torch work.
  • Electricians: Shock, arc flash, lockout with multiple sources, temporary power, GFCIs and ladders near energized parts.

More trades (plumbers, HVAC, framers, welders and others) are being added. Until then, browse the full construction safety topics list or workplace safety topics.

How to use trade toolbox talks

  • Match the talk to this week's tasks, not just the trade. An electrician pulling wire in a trench needs the excavation talk too.
  • Mixed crews and multi-trade sites: run the talk for the trade with the highest-risk task that day, and invite the other trades.
  • Rotate through the list. Coming back to the same core hazards every few weeks keeps them from fading.
  • Use the sample outline as a script for new foremen, then let them make it their own with stories from your jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a trade-specific toolbox talk?

A short safety talk built around the tasks, tools and hazards of one trade, such as electrical, roofing or concrete work, instead of a general workplace topic. Crews tend to engage more when the hazard is one they will face that day.

How long should a trade toolbox talk take?

About 10 minutes works for most crews: one hazard, the controls for it, a quick hands-on check and time for questions. Record who attended.

Can I use these talks on a multi-trade job site?

Yes. Pick the talk for the highest-risk work happening that day and invite every trade that works near it. The working alongside subcontractors talk helps with coordination.

Are these toolbox talks OSHA-aligned?

The talks are written to align with OSHA topics and standards, but a toolbox talk does not replace the training, programs and written procedures your employer and OSHA rules require.
