Hydrogen Sulfide Safety

Chemical Hazards | 10-15 min

Summary

Hydrogen sulfide is one of the leading causes of sudden death in the workplace, killing workers within minutes at high concentrations. At low levels, it produces the distinctive rotten egg odor, but at dangerous concentrations above 100 ppm, it paralyzes the olfactory nerve and victims lose the ability to smell it - often leading them to believe the danger has passed just as it becomes lethal. This phenomenon, called olfactory fatigue, has contributed to many H2S deaths.
